Perhaps you have some combination of Beetle cap/wires? The Type III cap is shorter than a Beetle cap (at least for the tall f.i. distributor!), and the wires fit to the cap with a right-angle connector. Beetle wires have a straight connector & go right up out of the cap. I'm guessing that if you some Beetle ignition parts in there, it might be sticking up too high & hitting the lid. -Greg '71 squareback '63 Beetle
