GregM=> reinstall the cooling air control system (thermostat, pre-heat
=> flaps, etc.) ... installing the system without removing the
=> engine ... reasonably possible?
I recently went through the procedures to remove most of this stuff (a
PO had taken out the thermo and *left in* the flaps), and I had to pull
the engine. The long hinge rod for the flaps has to thread right through
the entire fan housing from the side, which can't be done inside the
compartment. Assuming the later models use the same arrangement and you
have to put this rod in, you'll at least have to pull the exhaust, the
rear heat boxes, the fan, the housing and all the small stuff around the
rear of the engine. If you take the engine out you can leave the fan and
the front half of the fan housing on the engine, and the whole job will
be a lot easier to deal with, imho.
If the rod is still in place, you might be able to attach the flaps to
it on the car, but it'll be a blue cussing job reaching over and around
to tighten the microbolts that hold the assembly together. You'll still
have to get the rear half of the fan housing off, in any case.
