68 Squareback?

Bob,
If you don't mind teaching yourself how to work on the VW
yourself ownership can be fairly inexpensive. I would suggest picking
up a copy of Muir's "How to keep you Volkswagen alive.. A guide for the
complete Idiot." This book walks you through pretty much every
maintenance job you could think of in simple language and is very
straight forward. If you don't think you can perform a lot of the
things in there you might be in for an expensive ownership. Shops
charge a good penny now adays. 35-50+ $/hour. If you buy a VW then
search hard for a reputable mechanic that is very familiar with VW's.
Just because someone is the best Chevy mechanic doesn't mean he holds a
candle to a decent backyard VW mechanic. VW's are relatively simple but
you don't treat them like any old American car.
I think that this list would also be a great asset. Everyone is
willing to give their two cents. If you give us enough information we
will probably be able to walk you through your problem.

In a nutshell if you are unwilling to learn how to do:

An oil change,
Spark plugs,
Points,rotor, cap and wires,
brake adjustment,
and probably a valve adjustment

you most likely won't really enjoy VW ownership unless you are willing to pay
someone to perform all of these tasks. These five things are spelled out very
well in Muir's book. They are pretty easy to pick up.

P.S. Where do you live? Someone on the list might live near and be willing to
help out occasionally.

I used to have a 68 Squareback that did not run, I had to sell it
due to the overwhelming cost to fix it up. I'm considering buying another
one, but would like to be more informed this time. If anyone could give
me some info on ownership I would appreciate it.

                    Thanks, Bob
