These are on the squareback's "D" pillar and are separate from the engine air intakes. Air from open windows or dash vents is supposed to exit there. If the exhaust clamps at the rear end of the heater boxes are not sealing, then exhaust fumes can be forced into the heater boxes (despite the overpressure therein) if they're in so-so shape. -Greg '71 squareback '63 Beetle
