I wonder if your case could be modified to include the holes for the dipstick tube. I suppose so, but then again I get the feeling you don't want to do a complete rebuild here, otherwise you would have started out with the right case. >> All, I have a '67 squareback with a '71 beetle dual port engine in it. The rear mount (same as a '68) was a direct bolt on to the fan housing....so it is usable if you switch all the parts. I fashioned a longer dip stick and tube attachment to extend the original beetle style dip stick tube....it worked great! :) I then used a rubber expansion plug (from a local hardware store) to replace the plastic cover on the stock type 3 oil breather. It has a handle so I can pull it off to add oil since there is no lower hole in the block. One thing, I had to use a 1/8" NPT allen head pipe plug to seal the original oil sender hole (the type 3 has one on the cooler). The allen head was necessary for clearance, but I can't remember for what...just that you need to do it. I have to open the access cover to check the oil, but this is only temporary. I have a rebuilt type 4 waiting to go in the bay....2 liter 914 P&L's and 914 1.8 heads....rocket square! :) Go for it...fix your leaks first....because as Jim alluded to....it will keep asking you why you did it every time you pull the access cover to check the oil! :) Mike
