Vacuum advance mechanisms

Hello everyone, I have some questions and an interesting story to
tell you.

Firstly, is there a difference between the distributors and vacuum
advance units of an automatic compared to a manual shift T3?

Mow my story: Some years ago the dizzy on my '69 SQB developed so
much play around the shaft that I could no longer set the points gap
properly. Consequintly the engine would not idle and the general
performance was terrible. As VWSA no longer stocked T3 distributors I
was faced with either fixing the broken unit or getting a Bosch 009.
Being a relatively poor student at the time, I had to settle for the
009 as it was lots cheaper than fixing the old one.

The 009 seemed to work well enough and I even installed a Petronix
Ignitor set on it last year. Then yesterday I was wondering what
would happen if I put the Ignitor on my old dizzy seeing that it (the
Ignitor) can compensate for some wear round the shaft. So I went
ahead and swapped the two last night. Top end performance is
virtually the same but at the bottom end it has improved greatly. I
think the engine feels happier and it has more power to spare when
cruising than it used to have. Hope my fuel consumption will come
down a bit now!!

I will see how it goes from here. BTW the car is 3200 miles away from
clocking over for the second time! 200 000 miles - yikes that a
lot!!!!! How many miles/kilometres have your cars clocked up?
