| hey all,
| i have yet another question. my '73 squareback that i

| rebuilt the engine in (less than 1000 miles). is having a

| at idle i can here a noise that eminates up the oil fill

| like the oil pickup is gurgling. i think this means that
| it needs oil, but
| the dipstick says it is full. i do have an external oil

Scott,

I know the most obvious things are often overlooked, however, when did you
check the oil last, before the engine went in or after. Before you started it
or after. When you checked it, was it on level ground.

You said you filled the external filter with oil? Or did you mean you filled
the system with oil to include the external filter. In either case did you
use a measured "dose" or what you thought was "enough"?

I recently put an engine in my Square which when I first put it in was over
full. But a week later when I went back to recheck it, it was about half full
(where I thought it should be anyway). And no, none had leaked out. Hasn't
the oil got to fill some channels and get pushed into some places where it
will sit, therefore giving a false impression that it is full when it is
really only half-full.

I remember on my Sigma when the head gasket blew, when I finally got it back
together there was still oil in the pickup pipe and oil pump which was
contaminated and needed to be run for 15 minutes to remove it. Even though
I'd drained the system.

So I suggest you recheck everything. It might be something simple like that.
Hope this helps.

Wayne
