Hi folx- I've had a VDO temp gauge and the bottom of the engine case sensor (the one that screws into the oil pres relief valve screw hole- if that makes sense...) for the last three years. I have been told that this is the hottest spot for the oil, as it is furthest away from the oil cooler. In any case, my 68 sqbk runs at like 220F to 250F on normal days (70s temp, in town) but on hot days when im on the freeway doin 65+ for any length of time it creeps up to about 300F. If I decide to take the sqbk to Santa Cruz on one of these hot days (huge uphill over Hwy 17) I'm lookin at the thing creeping up towards 350F! Now, this freaks me out, but I have never heard a heat ping or smelled burning engine when it is this hot, and just back off on the throt a bit until it cools. Once I make it to the downhill run on the beach side the gauge reads 250 F again. :) (Stupid) Question: Is my oil viscosity-less at this point (once it gets to over 300F) and if so does it regain viscosity again as it cools? Or is the oil "burned" after it gets this cookin and in need of changing? I regularly change oil every 1K or so, but am wondering if I should do a change after I get the engine cooking like this (which happens perhaps 3-4 times a year)? THANKS! Dave Y. 1968 Sqbk PS I just scanned photos of my first home body work job on the sqbk after I rearended someone like a dweeb: The replacement of the whole front clip (which I had to saw off with a saws-all and then re-weld behind the gas tank!) hood, and front left fender! Talk about SURGERY!! I got a matching front clip for (GET THIS) $35 at Bud's Bugs in Concord, a straight hood for $15, and a clean fender for $20. The job was *insane*, but I pulled it off. The pictures are shocking. :) Will post therm to my website soon so you all can share my horror and eventual triumph...
