A good through cleaning of all battery cable connections (especially the ground to the body/frame, everybody seems to skip this one) took care of the problem. The best theory I have come up with is that when you crawl under to jump the starter, you shame the car into cooperating for a little while. Have faith, this'll probably do the trick for ya'. I live a damp area and have seen a great many mysteries solved by cleaning a battery cable.
