I've had this same thing happen in the past ('65 Chevy P/U) with all of
the same weird symptoms. A good through cleaning of all battery cable
connections (especially the ground to the body/frame, everybody seems to
skip this one) took care of the problem. The best theory I have come up
with is that when you crawl under to jump the starter, you shame the car
into cooperating for a little while. Have faith, this'll probably do the
trick for ya'. I live a damp area and have seen a great many mysteries
solved by cleaning a battery cable.
