broken fuel gauge

hello,
	I have a unique problem when it comes to my fuel gauge.  You see I went
out of town for a few weeks and when I came back my '71 fastback
wouldn't start.  So I started to give it a jump start.  I heard a few
clicks coming from some relays under the rear seat when I put on the
jumper cables and then all of a sudden my fuel gauge doesn't work
anymore.  Question, did I smoke a relay or did I create some type of
short in that line?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
