I've read several times (including Gene Berg) that a stock oil pump will 
easily flow up to a 2.0L, possibly a tad more.  My engine builders stuck 
with the stock oil pump -- they said it was a hardy mechanism and would 
easily satisfy my oiling needs.

You can add a full flow system without a rebuild.  My pump cover and 
galley tapping was done with the engine (for the most part) still in the 
car.  Gene Berg explains how to do it (using compressed air in the 
case).  I recommend the GB full flow system complete with 
Teflon/stainless steel oil lines.

The only things you can do that are really useful are to add a full
flow filter and (posssibly) a larger oil pump. The first can only be
done in the course of a rebuild, and the second is much easier then.
