Yes, I HAVE seen this. Grease that junction when you put it back together.

A friend of mine came up with the same solution. Yes, it works well,
especially in the early cars where the pedal cluster is in two pieces. (His
was a 66.) Working on the later years I have always managed with some wood
blocks. All that is necessary is to not allow the pedal to fall backward to
the floor while you're installing the cluster.
