Re: Generator

My father had problems with the voltage regulator(VR) when he owned the
car. He found that if he gave the VR a sharp rap with the butt of a
screwdriver it would act correctly. Apparently the metal contacts can
stick together. I've replaced the VR before and it's easy -- same goes for
the generator.

The generator may just need to be cleaned (a lot of dust builds up in
there). Make sure all electrical connections to it are shiny and, like Jim
said, make sure both brushes are in. You must remove the generator to
install the second brush (easy to do!). If you notice that the copper
strips where the brushes brush against are dull, take a pencil eraser and
carefully rub the stuff off (let the copper shine through). The Idiot's
Guide tells how to test the generator, so make sure it's bad before
spending the cash.

I spoke to a guy (914 owner) who had an electronic VR made by Hella. He
wasn't able to tell me where he got it so does anyone have any ideas?
Also, at a VW show, I met a fellow T3er who told me he put an alternator in
his T3, in the stock generator location. Anyone got info on this setup?

Check the various advertisers in the VW magazines to find an Idiot's Guide.
Los Angeles is an air cooled VW Mecca -- you can always road trip it up
there and get one!

There are 2 brushes; you probably need to replace both of them. If you mean
that the light doesn't shut off even when you turn off the key, then that is
a regulator problem. If you think you need a new generator call around
until you find a shop that handles Bosch parts and get one rebuilt by Bosch.
