1500S Engine ??

I am attempting to make sense of the various factory engines built into the 
type IIIs over the years and I find that the microfilm seems to be 
completely silent on the 1500S engine.  Can anyone tell me exactly what it 
was and when it was produced.

These are the things that I need to pin down:
1) the displacement
2) the years of production
3) the engine letter prefix that it was associated with
4) what was special about it

I have my guesses, but I don't want to prejudice anyone's response.  So go 
ahead and tell me what you think.  If you have some reference to back you 
up, be sure to state exactly what it is.
