>My source for the M249 option on my 1964 1500 'S' engine is : >1. I wrote to germany and they proved my car was equipped from the >factory with M249 option Proved? Or do yu mean that they agreed, or that their records showed.... >2. My engine has the metal tag on the breather tower showing M249 Rather convincing, since there was no reason to put such a tag on an engine except for an option that you could not identify by external inspection. >3. My genuine VW Type 3 workshop manuals show the M249 option near the >back of the book where all the specs are given (perfermance, bhp etc). Is this one of the blue, six ring binder jobs? [Trying not to let my envy show....] What year? I checked my 60 and 65 type I Workshop Manuals and found no mention of M #s. If anyone has one of the original parts books, the M list should be in the front. Since these were earlier than the microfilm they might still have your earlier info. >I can probably arrange to send out a copy if you like. Why VW also used >the M249 number to describe the Auto trans later on is beyond me. Surely >there are engough numbers available without doubling up. Interesting. It appears that VW completely "purged" the micrifilm of this earlier reference since there is no mention of it either under the engine production codes (where M240 is noted), the piston part numbers, or the M # list. for some reason VW did commonly "recycle" M #s, but they are all rather carefully (I thought) documented on the list.
