I have scrapped out two 71s: the early one had the rectangular holes and the 
late one did not.  I have a set of the popout windows that have the plastic 
"thingies", but I didn't remove them myself so I have never seen exactly how 
they all fit together.  Could you please describe the spot welded tongue in 
more 
detail?

I think the "thingie" is: 311-847-129B PROTECTIVE STRIP - HINGE [4 per car]

There is also another part called out which appears to be the tab that 
sticks out of the window frame: 311-847-125A HINGE HOOK [4 per car]
