Dave Burden asked: >>Does this mean that all they did was use a large screw to mount the retractor >>unit for the 3 point harnesses? That sounds reasonable, but do you know the >>exact location of the special reinforcing to accept the screw? Ours is working >>fine with the way I mounted them, but I'm just curious as to how it would have >>looked from the factory. Not sure I understand your question, but I will try to explain what I can. Mounting points for 3-point retractors are EXACTLY the same regular 3-pointers. The retractor mounts on the lower outside mount point, feeds the belt to the upper outside mount point where it slips thru an anchor and passes across the your chest. It then passes gack across your waist to the outside lower mount point. Thus the belt starts and finishes at the same point: outside lower. When not in use the belt retracts into a loop from bottom outside to top outside and back. A 2-part slider keeps the "buckle" at a convenient place to grab when you sit down and pull across both your waist and chest and snap the "buckle" into its mate. The mate, BTW, is different from the regualar 3-point anchor, consisting of two separate anchors cable mounted to the floor points. >>BTW, even the Rabbits have the upper nut 3 point harnesses in the rear, >>although all the US market Rabbits I've even seen only have lap belts in the >>back. I'm sure that VW put in the same mounting in all their cars from at least 68-on so they did not have to make different versions of the bodies for different markets. Think about it; this way all they had to do was add different accessories depending on local laws and customs.
