Larry, Thanks for the quick reply. Yup, she was definitely hitting all four cylinders, at least at idle. A hand over the exhaust pipe gave me a constant "rhythm". I had some problems at higher revs, especially in 3rd and 4th, and figured a tune up was all that was needed...although there was a faint sniff of gas when I'd get out of the car... I'll check the wire position tomorrow and get to the bottom of this. I sincerely hope that I was out of sync, or I've got a job ahead of me. The $64 question, to at least let me sleep better: if I was out of sync, could it explain the "tight" valve? Thanks.
