Hiya there al...my names matt and I'm a subscriber to this type III
mail-share club thing, and I thought you might appreciate a little
constructive criticism...I had a pretty difficult time trying to
understand what you were saying in your note, the one about the
diaphragm...the "FI"...the other sort of jargony stuff... everybody
knows its completely up to you how you wanna write, but knowing there's
a bunch of type III STUDENTS out here, perhaps being a tad more clear is
a good thing?

Hi Matt,

Sorry, I've been on the list for a while and just fly with the typing
and just assume everyone knows the jargon.

------------- TO ALL WHO NEED TO KNOW: --------------
Definitions of slang terms used on the "type-3@umich.edu" list

Let's start at the begining...

T-1, T1, Type one: Bug, Ghia, Thing, any production VW with a pan
chassis and an upright aircooled motor.

T-2, T2, Type two: Bus or any of the bus variations, any production VW
with an upright or type-four aircooled motor, but the body cannot be
separated from the pan.

T-3, T3, Type Three: Squareback, Notchback, Fastback, '62-'73, any
production VW with the compact "lay-down" or "suitcase" motor, 1500cc to
1600cc motor (Universal case) with cooling intake fan mounted to the
rear of the crankshaft.

T-34, T34: Type Three Karmann Ghia, '62-'69, special Ghia body fitted to
T-3 chassis and engine.

FI: Fuel Injection - Fitted on '69 and later T-3.

Diaphram: Some distrubutors use a diaphram (attached inside the dist.)
actuated by engine vacuum to advance the timing on the engine.

Duals, Dual Carb: Two Carburetors fitted to T-3 motors from '64 to '68
in US, optional equipment afterwards (can anyone confirm?)

Single, Single side draft: a singular, side-draft carburetor fitted to
'62-'63 t-3's.

"Auto" or "Manual": Transmission options for T-3, Automatic option
offered from '68 to '73

Push-button, Pushbutton dash: '62- mid '64 T-3's with original driver's
controls that were all "pushbutton" operated, including head lights,
parking lights, wipers, wiper speed and washers.

"Early" or "Late": a generic term breaking T-3's to '69 and earlier and
'70 and later.

Are there any I left out? Anyone?

This is a basic listing, please ask if there are any terms you don't
understand. We are just saving some keystrokes, not trying to exclude
anyone.

Hope this helps,
there will be a test later...

(just kidding)

Big Al
