If the requests roll in I'll type in the whole story with details but I used
Amziol synthetic in my Squareback about 6 years ago. Nearly new engine, stock
1600 10Kmi and within 300 miles it ground out every bearing and scored every
cylinder. Couldn't drive on the highway without temp heading for the pin,
in WINTER to boot! Yes the cooling flaps were open and when the case was
refilled with pennzoil it ran fine (although with half the oil press of
previous and bearing knock every startup.
WHAT HAPPENED??? Two thoeries: 1) amsoil couldnt transfer heat properly
from the heads to the oil and through the cooler, this would explain the
heating and the viscosity was so thin the oil press was inadequate. You
can't run and aircooled motor without the oil helping with the cooling.
2) the superior detergent quality of the oil scrubbed out all the
neatly stored deposits in the oil cooler etc. and kept running them through the
bearings since theres no oil filter.
I had quite a thread going with an Amzoil rep. a while back who posted on
the air newsgrp, when he learned that he was reccomending his product to
people who have no oil filter (most of us stockers), he stoped answering
me and never posted again.
Moral: well maybe the oils have improved to reduce the problems I had
but using something in an engine that was not designed for it, especially
an engine that is not conventional like ours, runs risks. Gene Berg has opinions on this I would suggest checking out but if your completely stock, with no
filter, Hmmmmm... what prevents even the smallest loosened deposit from
getting recirculated through our bearings again and again? Another uestion
to ask yourself: Has anyone run this stuff stock for 100K or more and
had good results with an air motor? You can with the Pet oils.
Just my experience and 2 cents
