My only solution has been to try to give it lots of throttle at those times. I
know that's more of a workaround than a solution, but it's all I've got so far.

A couple of years ago I took the pan off and removed, and disassembled, the
valve body. There was no dirt and it didn't change anything.

I've been looking at the exploded views and wondering if I remembered a large
spring that should have fallen down when I pulled out the valve body. That
spring is the accumulator spring which stores up ATF under pressure. Without
that spring it wouldn't be able to return ATF to the system when it was needed.

I suspect that the spring is actually there, but I just don't remember removing
and replacing it, so I'll probably end up doing this again someday soon.

Anyone got an AT in parts that they'd like to sell an accumulator spring out
of?
