I used a brazing torch, my home made puller, lots of WD40, and lot of
violence (hammering the end of the axle) and it finally came off. It needed
to be pulled all the way though. Its a bit battered where the nut will seat,
but it will clean up OK.
I tried it on the car, and sure enough, the axle splines are damaged too, so
I had to take the axle out of the parts car. That was relatively easy :-) At
least I know it fits the drum tightly!
Replacing the wheel bearings, which is where all this started, will be a
walk in the park after all this hassle :-)
