Greg's autotranny quirks

Hi Greg

As promised, here are some tips on your parking lock problem.

The VW workshop manual says: "When the selector lever is moved to
position P, a pawl is pressed against the outer rim of the planet
carrier which is grooved to form teeth. When the vehicle is moving
very slowly, the pawl engages in one of the grooves and locks the
rear wheels via the planet carrier. ...snip..."

The internal components of the parknig lock requires the transmission
to be dissassembled to get at, but it is possible though that the
selector cable needs adjustment as problems here can cause the
parking lock to act up.

To adjust the cable:

Move selector lever to Park position
Loosen nut on cable clamp
Press lever fully to the rear, turn the rear wheels slightly until
parking lock engages and then tighten nut on clamp. When doing so,
position the wrench so that when tightening the nut. the lever is
pressed to the rear in the park direction.

See if this helps.
