I always hook up engine monitoring equipment. You can get a rpm, timing, dwell meter, clip the leads on and know exactly what the status is.

Lori, actually what most of us do, is set something to hold the  throttle
open at 2000 to 2300 rpms, and just let the engine run for 20 minutes,
occasionally reving it up a little more, but not letting the engine speed
drop
below 2000 rpms.
I hope this helps.

How do you know when it's at 2000 rpm?  There's no meter in the car.
