Actually, Jim, I started with the "spot" method, putting a dab in the four corners.  Then, when it came time to change the gaskets...when they were well cooked, I found that the RTV was so easy to remove that I decided to run a light bead on the entire surface.  My covers are all powder coated as well, which helps.  
And, yes,I suppose I'm fortunate to have the space for a few spares and conveniences...
