The '80s VWs we've had used 12mm M8 exhaust nuts certainly.  I've not had to
mess with the '90s enough yet to know, luckily.

That's right, there's been a steady progression from larger to smaller
heads. It's not just a recent fad. M8 bolts started out at 14 mm, then
became 13 mm, now 12 mm (at least in Japan, JIS standard.) Does anyone know
if the M8 DIN standard has been revised down to 12 mm yet?
