Sounds like your AAR is stuck and isn't opening when cold. That would mean that 
adjustment isn't the problem. Don't bother with adjustment. If you've taken it 
apart before, you might have the piston in backwards, which would keep it from 
ever opening. There's also a plate on top that limits the travel; that plate 
can be installed wrong, preventing correct operation.

To test if it's stuck, you can either remove it and check, or blow thru it when 
both hot and cold. It should blow much more freely when cold. You can do this 
out of the car using hot and cold water.

Even sticky ones will often loosen and open after a minute of running, 

The problem is often warping of the pot metal die cast housing.
