When they get worn, the moving contact eventually gets to the point 
where it shorts between those segments. On 72-3 cars this manifests 
itself in the FI shutting down until the contact moves and removes 
that short. This generally happens in the most worn part of the 
contact motion, where it has spent the most time.

I've only seen this problem with the 5 pin TVSs, even though the 4 
pin TVSs appear to have exactly the same construction. It's possible 
that the construction is different in some way that I can't see, but 
it's also possible that they have the same problem but the 70-1 
brains just aren't bothered by it.

I think my TVS FAQ is ready to send out. It's not complete, however, 
so I'm hoping to get some feedback from 70-1 owners who can tell me 
what they find.

I'll send out a general announcement on this tomorrow.

In the meantime, I think it's always prudent to lubricate any moving 
part. Just don't use a grease that might be so stiff that it could 
prevent contact in cold weather. And be sure to clean everything 
before you apply the grease; grease mixed with grit would probably be 
worse than nothing.
