The main difference is, that up to and including 65 the Square and Notchback
had 3 bolt door hinges. After 65 (for the 66 model year) VW changed to 2 bolt
hinges (except the Notch which stayed 3 bolt) until the end of production. So
what you're basically looking for are doors from a Squareback from 1961 to
1965, or a Notchback from 1961until 1967 (68 the outer skin changed due to the
door handle change). These are early "1500" cars, which means there's a premium
price for these due to their rarity in the USA (up to 65 all t-3s were "gray
market" cars). It really boils down to the hinge change though, as the doors
are basically the same between 65 and 66. The 67's are slightly different due
to a bunch of little changes, ie...the outside door handles are 1 year only,
the outside trim is the same as the 68 and laters (thin style), along with a few
more changes.
Sites that will help are; The Samba (both the classifieds and the t-3 forum),
and the 1500 club ( http://www.vw1500.com/) as they are a wealth of
information for early cars. I'm sure there are other sites too, but these 2 stand out.
I hope this helps.
