Things to check:

1) Check compression to rule out loose/pulling head studs.

2) Check the tightness of the heat exchangers and the intake
manifolds to the heads.

3) Use a long screwdriver like a stethoscope (blunt end in ear!) to
narrow down the source of the noise. Listen all around the engine,
including on the generator.

4) Check for any looseness of the fan housing to the engine. The 2
screws that bolt it to the case often come loose if they are not
secured really well.
