As long as it's below the level of the bottom of the fuel tank, it
will cure any possible vapor lock problem (assuming the filter screen
in the tank is clean.)
I don't think I'd want to see one installed under the back seat. The
gas line doesn't normally run within the passenger compartment, and
running it back under the back seat strikes me as a safety hazard. If
it's in the space next to the transmission, under the cargo area,
that would be okay, but then I'd wonder why it wasn't just done under
the tank, in front.

In general, our engines don't have much of a problem with vapor lock,
because the engine sits so low. Dave H. has pointed out that in case
of a fuel pump failure, a type 3 carbed engine will run on gravity
alone, as long as the gas tank is more than half full.

The one we found here was for Fords, and was available from NAPA auto
parts stores for ~US$25. You might be able to find a generic one at
your FLAPS.
