Different headache. I noticed a rotted overflow hose a long time ago and
fabricated a replacement. So, no leak there. However, when I fill it up and
park it in the garage, there is always a strong smell of gas until I run it
down to about 3/4 of a tank. After I run it past 3/4 tank there is still an
odor of gas but, it is not as strong.
Check inside the trunk. Check the seal around the gas gauge pickup
and especially the large hose that connects the filler pipe to the
tank. That latter seal is a special deal that always gets screwed up
if someone removes the tank. It can NOT be fixed by tightening the
clamp, no matter what kind of clamp you use. It just needs to be
assembled with ALL the right parts and then lightly clamped.
Also, if you fixed your overflow hose, did you make sure that your
vent line was not blocked? By now ALL of them are blocked so you have
to do something to let air in the tank as gas goes out. The OE steel
lines all corrode on the inside until they will no longer pass
anything, even a tiny amount of air.
