Steve, I chose A.  However, since I don't know what is causing it, I cannot 
fix it!

I guess the consensus is that it's the rings. I still don't see how the oil 
is getting from the cylinder walls to the combustion chanber when it's 
parked on a level surface. The cylinders don't angle downward toward the 
heads, do they???

Seems like if it has been doing it for 20 years and the car still runs and
drives, must not be that big a deal or you would have A: fixed it or B the
car would have died of it.

Either would be just ducky, mate.

I've parked it on a level surface and on an angle. It doesn't make any
difference as to the volume of the cloud.

You know, I've owned quite a few VW's over the last 40 years. I have 3 now,
a bug, a bus and the square.  I've never seen anything like this before.
