The trick with heli-coils is getting them in to the right depth. The installer I have has a stop collar that is set to get it just right.

The stop collar sounds like a great idea. You could set it up with a bare head and then just use it as necessary, assuming that all the heads were the same. I'll bet they are all pretty close.

Did the stop collar come with your Heli-Coil kit, or did you have to make it yourself?
Mine is a factory set up specifially for VW's. The tool is made to go through the tin and into the head. The tap is a self piloting, reaming tap. Uses what ever remains of the old threads to guide the tap and ream, then tap to the right size. I have a spare installer, but not a spare tap. And on Ebay they go for over $100.
