I love that feeling when you successfully diagnose and correct a problem, it is satisfying. (haven't had a whole lot of luck with that lately)

I'll file this away as another thing to check if I get similar symtoms!

Got about 2 miles from his shop, and the fasback started acting up, and finally died completely. Mess around in the engine compartment for a bit, and found that I did have spark, and the injectors did rack when I operated the throttle. I had power to both wires on the ECU, and the pump would run if I turned the key on, and would stay running if I shorted the connector in the engine compartment.
I checked all the wires at the pressure sensor, and still nothing.
I had another pressure sensor in the car, so I installed it. The car started. Took off down the road, and about 1/4 mile, it quit again.
Called my buddy on the cell phone, and he brought his trailer, and we hauled it to his shop.
Went back this morning with more of the proper tools, and started checking. I had good fuel pressure. The injectors worked when I operated the throttle.
Then I decided to try it with the 220 ohm resistor out of the head sensor lead. Bingo, it started up and ran. I got to looking at the resistor. A couple weeks ago, I had encased it in shrink tubing. With the shrink tubing over the female connector, it would not plug into the harness properly. I trimmed the shrink tubing back with my pocket knife, got it plugged in properly, and it fired right up.
But I had forgotten my cell phone, and wasn't about to drive it home without a cell phone with me. I drove the green car home, got the wife and the SUV with the tow rope, and went back after it. It purred all the way home with no hiccups.
I have my fingers crossed that this has been the problem all along.

Russ Wolfe <a href="mailto:russw@classicvw.org"; target="_blank">russw@classicvw.org

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
