[T3] What is this part?

I have a fuel leak in the area of the fuel pump and fuel filter.  I have
replaced a few of the lines and tightened all the clamps but still have
a leak.  It may be a cracked fuel filter case so I will replace the
filter.  Close to the filter is a small (2 1/2" dia. X 1/2") metal
canister that is connected to the fuel lines.  What is this and what
does it do?  I did not see anything in my Bentley manual.
