Your correct! It was actually bought in Germany by a G.I. who could not
afford the taxes to bring it to the states so he sold it to another G.I. who
did bring it back. He was the second owner and now I am the third.

It's actually a '64 model year, which appeared in the dealer showrooms in
Sept
of '63. In order to do this, the first ones had to be made in August of '63.
We
don't have monthly records of production numbers, but your VIN was a pretty
early '64.
Finding errors in the titles of old cars is pretty common, especially in
cars
that were imported by individuals, as this must have been. The first year
that
VW actually sold type 3s in the US was the '66 model year, so yours was
probably brought in either from Canada or from Europe by a returning GI.
