At least for most timing lights, I think you have this backwards. 

Most timing lights need connections for power and ground, so the hot 
side of the coil is a useful place to connect for power. I could 
imagine a timing light that used the distributor side for the strobe 
timing, but I've never seen one like that.

Trying to take the power from the distributor side of the coil, will 
either kill the engine right away, or kill it when the timing light 
trigger is pulled, depending on the design of the timing light.
