No, I did not misunderstand him. In the case of the windshield he
was able to beat on it quite hard (with his hand) to get the glass
and the seal to sit correctly. Because the windshield is not flat,
it does not twist or flex much during installation.
The flat glass can be subjected to too much torsion (twist) if you
are not careful, and beating on them to get them to seat when they
are halfway in is dangerous according to him. This is why it took
them so long, they had to gently work the glass and the seals into
place without pushing on them too hard until they were all the way
in. The they beat on them gently with their hands to get a 100% fit.
On the other hand we are talking about someone who installs 6 to 8
windshields a day (and he is a mobile operator, every job is in a
different location), so his biggest concern is always time.

I think it's most likely that you misunderstood him. He surely knows
better. The 2 types of glass break in completely different ways, and
the side glass breaks much more spectacularly, but it takes a LOT
more to get it to fail.
