Well, I thought I bought the ignition switch, but all I got was the key
cylinder and housing. I sent the seller an electronic letter, and he
requested pictures. Being new to this, I do not know if I have something
to
take a picture of. I found in the parts that came with my 1971
Squareback,
a cylinder with a flat top dome, and a disk of plastic with ~3" wires
soldered to it. The dome of the cylinder has a key hole, and a odd
shaped
brass disk inside.
That sounds like the ignition switch after it has come apart. You
won't have any luck getting it back together yourself. This is
something else you should let me do. If you send it, make sure to
send everything that might possibly have anything to do with it. I
will return any parts that are not part of the switch.
Well, I read this, and then was able to pull out my old one. I believe we
are getting mixed up. I received a large quantity of parts with my
Squareback (which I am still trying to figure out what everything is). In
that, I found the disk and the cylinder. I believe these to be the switch
mechanism. When the seller asked for pictures, I was trying to figure out
what I was missing. Now that I have pulled the one out of the auto, I
realize it is the parts that go into the cylinder, for the cylinder is still
in the casing, and the wires/disk. I sent him an electronic letter asking
to investigate, and if still in the steering housing to leave them. If it
is the later, I will request he sent the whole unit. He should eat it,
right?
After I wrote this, I thought I try my hand at taking apart the one I
received. No luck except for moving it a grand 1mm, mushrooming the
edge,
and putting a scratch on the finnish. So, what did I do wrong? I
followed
the Bentley to a tee.
Then, I tried getting the old one out. I failed miserably. First off, I
thought you "dropped the column" by removing the allen head bolts. So,
now I
can not get the housing back on. Next, I still seemed to brake the
terminal. After pulling the broken piece of it off the wire, I could not
get the unit out. Yes, I did take out the cover with the two screws. I
tried prying, but I am doing more damage than good. I guess what I need
is
better illustrated instructions for a block of wood.
Once you drop the column you have to release the cylinder. The
cylinder won't come out until the wires are free AND the spring catch
is released. This is done according to the instructions in the
Bentley. There is a spring you have to depress to release it. Read
thru the Bentley section until you get the idea.
The Bentley was wrong in showing just the cylinder coming out. I did not
want this to happen, so I just skipped it. I tried the method, and the
whole unit nearly fell right into my hand. Once I got the switch out, I see
that the steering wheel lock needs to be released before it will come out.
Sincerely,
Adriel H. Rowley
P.S. I think it got sent to the wrong adress. Sorry Mr. Adney if it did.
