As they are positioned in the head in relation to the oil supply. And,
they are further canted at an upward angle decreasing further, the
chance for oil to get into the guides. Even without stem seals, ACVW's
are rarely seen burning oil on deceleration, unlike a VW Rabbit, and
other upright engines.
If you ran an ACVW engine rotated 90 degrees, then you would not have
this problem.

VW didnt use anything at all until about 1966. When they started
demanding more out of their engine design.
