Pure speculation, but I would bet that the profile of the exhaust
content as read by the O2 sensors shifts the engine management system
into "E85  mode".

Just a guess on my part.

BTW, wouldn't it make sense to have the lines and tank be stainless
steel, as alcohol absorbs water readily.
