I've had this car for close to eight years now. It came to me with the 028 
brain (that's Bosch part # 0280 000 028; VW part # 311 906 021E), matching "E" 
pressure sensor (Bosch # 0280 100 116; VW # 311 906 051E) AND throttle valve 
switch (Bosch # 0280 120 024; VW # 311 906 111E). It also came with the 311 905 
205L distributor. All of it had worked well together until this happened so I 
thought it best to keep the part numbers the same.

what I dont see is the advance range for this one.
is it vac only or dual advance?
did you check the advance when you had the light on it?

Yes, timing is set at 5deg BTDC per Bentley. It's the third mark from the 
left.
The spark advance curve for the 311 905 205L distributor can be found in the 
fourth edition (copyright 1972) of the Elfrink FI Technical Manual on page 42.
This dizzy (quoting Elfrink) "...is a conventional single breaker type with 
combined centrifugal and vacuum advance." Short answer - it's a single vacuum 
advance.
And, yes, I checked the advance with timing light.
