Well, it doesn't sound like you're describing an outside door handle, and this doesn't sound like a VW inside door handle, either. So would it be the window winder knob?
If so, there were 2 styles. Early cars used a pin thru the handle and shaft, while late cars have a screw that comes from the fact of the winder into the end of the shaft. The screw head is hidden under a plastic strip.
