I pulled the flywheel (one nice thing about a lightened flywheel is that it doesn't hurt so much when you drop it on your foot!) Anywho, the oil was everywhere but didn't seem to have gotten into the clutch much if any. I pulled the main seal and it looked OK but was noticeably stiffer than the one I pulled out of the Squareback a few weeks ago. The sealing surface on the flywheel had a bit of a mark on it, kind of like that flywheel came out of an engine that had been outdoors for a while and they didn't completely clean it off when the machined it. It didn't seem bad enough to be leaking but???? Its getting a new seal, O ring, and I emeryed the sealing surface to smooth out any irregularities. The cam plug was in place but had a couple nicks in the outer rubber surface, they didn't seem to go through and it didn't give me the impression that it was leaking but it sure did come right out of there when I speared it with a screwdriver The center of that plug is only thin rubber, and I can see this stiffening up after enough years and cracking... crappy design! But not yet a problem with mine. Perhaps the RTV that I used as a sealant was getting affected by the oil around that plug and I will put the next one in dry as per Tim's recommendation at Berg. The galley plugs and such didn't look cracked and didn't seem to be leaking, but ??? hard to tell for sure. I epoxyed them in place anyway just as an extra measure. So, no smoking gun, but a layer of haze.... I sure hope this takes care of it as I don't know where I could go from here.
