Maybe I just needed an adjustment... I have my pedal adjusted so it engages
just above the floor, and it was doing that so it seemed fine but that
leaves it harder to see if there is normal freeplay in the cable.

Oh well, it was coming apart anyway and the disk was only $35 so Ill save
the old one.

Other way around. Wear makes the free play go away. You need to make 
sure the free play always stays above zero.

A hard flywheel O-ring does sound like a problem, however. I usually 
don't see them get hard unless they have gotten really hot, but that 
could happen just because the clutch was slipping.
