Methanol/water would probably have been OK for a short run. Isn't methanol what "alcohol" dragsters burn. IIRC it does burn very hot. Some of them have water injection to cool the engine. In the combustion chamber the water droplets boil to steam, which uses up a lot of thermal energy (latent heat of ... er ... vapourisation?). You wouldn't get hydro lock because the water is there in small quantities, its in droplet form, and there is still gas (i.e. air) in there to compress first. You'd only get hydro lock when the volume of liquid water sucked in is greater than the cylinder volume at the top of the stroke. -- Matt. UK.
