The engineers did take into consideration the holes in the air intake.
The installation kit included some self adhesive foam rubber pieces that
were supposed to be slit and installed over the holes in the housing
with the belt running thru the slits. The holes in the housing were only
supposed to be 3/4" with 1/2" slots to the edge.
Most installations that I have seen (other than mine) were hack jobs
with 1 1/4" holes (that was the hole saw used for the hoses into the
body)and slotted that way to the edge. And none of the foam. 
I wish I still had a copy of the installation instructions around, and I
would post them.
