There should be a spring that keeps the pin locked into the track when the
seat adjusting lever is released, and the should be a bent strip of metal (held
on by a philips screw) that should keep the seat from sliding to far rearward.
If both of these pieces are missing, then you'll get what you're describing.
I believe beetle and maybe Rabbit/Golf parts interchange, but don't quote me
on that. I hope this helps.
