Thanks for the comments. I discovered the problem after the engine  
had been running for only a few moments. I then tried to fit the pump  
on another case and discovered that it was rubbing. So, I don't think  
that there was too much rubbing on the engine in the car. Perhaps I  
should not have been surprised at the quality control. The amount of  
filing was very small, just enough to relieve this part of the pump.  
But the lesson has been learned. When I do the next engine, and there  
certainly will be another, I will dry assemble with the pump. Cheers.
